A new Developer Update video for Overwatch has been released, and it breaks down the Summer Games event and its content.
Hosted once again by Jeff Kaplan, the video explains some of the intentions of the Summer Games. Kaplan talks about the Summer Games loot boxes, which are only obtainable during the event, and hold exclusive gear. Players will only be able to earn this gear during the event, and Kaplan feels that this makes the gear even more special.
“We actually don’t expect that all players will get all Summer Games items,” Kaplan states. “We want this to be a thing where six months from now, when the Summer Games have long passed, that you look back on somebody who’s in that cool Summer Games Zarya skin and go, ‘Oh, man, I can’t wait until next year when the Summer Games happens, maybe I’ll be lucky enough to get that skin.'”
It is also mentioned that the content will not only be exclusive to the Summer Games event, but that it cannot be purchased with in-game currency. This means that the gear is only obtainable through random chance in loot boxes.
Overwatch is available on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The Summer Games event will takes place until August 22nd. It was also mentioned that this is the first seasonal event for Overwatch, and that it will not be the last.
