Blizzard explains Overwatch optimization for PlayStation 4
A spokesperson for Blizzard has come forward to explain what the PlayStation 4 Pro patch does for Overwatch-- and it's unfortunately less than expected. Many patches have drastically improved the visual quality of games from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 4 Pro, often either offering a major boost to framerate, a major boost to resolution, or a slight boost to both. After Overwatch got its PS4 Pro patch, though, many users couldn't tell the difference; at 4K, it's still running in 1080p.Eurogamer reached out to Blizzard for comment, and got the following response: "Primarily, Overwatch players can expect improved performance in 1920x1080 resolution on PlayStation 4 Pro. We've also made several minor improvements that take advantage of the console's capabilities, including better texture filtering and UI enhancements."

Many patches have drastically improved the visual quality of games from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 4 Pro, often either offering a major boost to framerate, a major boost to resolution, or a slight boost to both. After Overwatch got its PS4 Pro patch, though, many users couldn’t tell the difference; at 4K, it’s still running in 1080p.
Eurogamer reached out to Blizzard for comment, and got the following response: “Primarily, Overwatch players can expect improved performance in 1920×1080 resolution on PlayStation 4 Pro. We’ve also made several minor improvements that take advantage of the console’s capabilities, including better texture filtering and UI enhancements.”
There were a few other improvements highlighted by Eurogamer: UI now draws at 4K, although the simple UI getting an update isn’t exactly game-changing. Texture filtering has improved, albeit on the same artwork. Depth of field has improved, but none of this is exactly game-changing to a game that already ran at or near 1080p 60fps on console.
Overwatch is a gorgeous game already, but it’s disappointing that Blizzard hasn’t figured out how to use the PS4 Pro to bring console graphics significantly closer to what the PC version can do. With time, and future updates, that will hopefully change.
Overwatch is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
