Fitting perfectly into Sony’s ‘one last thing’ slot for the PlayStation Experience Keynote, Naughty Dog blew fans away with the reveal of The Last of Us Part II.
Taking place what seems to be years after the events of the first game, Part II sees the return of dual protagonists Joel and Ellie. And while story details are still sparse, there can be little doubt the title is aiming for the same punch as its predecessor.
Careful to make it clear that the game is still very early in development, “I can’t tell you how satisfying it is to finally be able to say that Ellie and Joel are back for another intense, harrowing, and emotional adventure,” Creative Director Neil Druckmann writes on the PlayStation Blog.
“Like many of you, we have a deep love for the world of The Last of Us and its characters, and while a sequel may have seemed like a foregone conclusion, that wasn’t the case. We knew that it needed to be a story worth telling and, perhaps more importantly, a story worthy of Joel and Ellie. After spending years on different ideas (and almost giving up), we finally uncovered a story that felt special—a story that evolved into an epic journey.”
Creators of The Last of Us, Neil Druckmann and his partner Bruce Straley both moved over to helm Uncharted 4 following the first game. If they are both now moving on to do the same for The Last of Us Part II, then the game is in very early development indeed.
