Rocket League’s last map took players to the bottom of the sea, so they went the opposite direction with their latest outer-space map, Starbase ARC.
Psyonix’s first press release on the map quotes Star Trek’s Captain Kirk to set the tone: “There’s another way to survive — mutual trust and help.” The accompanying Inside Look celebrates the collaboration of Psyonix in creating Starbase ARC, a new car for the occasion, new map variants Utopia Coliseum (Snowy) and Wasteland (Night), and a new texturing system for responsive maps called Pitch Tek. Psyonix also celebrates player collaboration with the addition of player-created custom training and Steam Workshop maps.
In a separate press release highlighting the new map and car (the Star Trek-referencing VULCAN), it is revealed that Starbase ARC (which is inspired by Halo, Elysium, Gundam, and Battlefleet Gothic: Armada) “is an octagonal, semi-standard stadium that orbits a huge (but familiar) desert planet where epic space battles are waged in the background and hulking celestial bodies drift about in the vastness of outerspace.” [Lore implications?] The update also goes into further detail about map preference selection and upcoming space and holiday cosmetics, and the thoughtful “colorblind mode” for colorblind players.
All Rocket League updates are free to those who own the game, except the VULCAN, whose sleek body and animated wings will cost $1.99 and is available with the rest of the updates now.
