The PlayStation 4 was the best selling console of December.
According to data from industry-tracking firm The NPD Group (via Venture Beat), the PlayStation 4 was the best selling console in the United States for the month of December. While Sony did not comment on the sales, they did confirm the data to GamesBeat. Microsoft stated that the Xbox One also did well, stating that their console outsold the PS4 in the second half of the year. While the PS4 outsold the Xbox One in the last two months of the year, the two consoles were closer in 2016 than they were in 2014 and 2015.
It was revealed last week that more than 6.2 million PlayStation 4 units were sold during the holidays. In total, 53.4 million PS4 units have been sold worldwide as of January 1, 2017. Software sales were also strong during the holidays, with over 50.4 million games being sold in both retail and digitally.
Sony also revealed the top downloaded games in 2016. The most downloaded game on the PlayStation 4 last year was Rocket League, which was surprising considering the game released in 2015, not 2016. Minecraft was the top digital performer on the PlayStation 3, while Job Simulator was the top downloaded game for the PlayStation VR. Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth was the top PlayStation Vita title, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas topped the PlayStation Classic category.
