Marvel promises new video games won’t be direct adaptations

Marvel fans have been excited ever since Insomniac Games announced its PlayStation 4 exclusive Spider-Man game all the way back in June. The Guardians of Galaxy Telltale game and the Square Enix Avengers announcements have only added fuel to the fire. Many people have speculated what stories each game will contain, but all we know for sure is these games will not follow any established canon.Marvel Games Creative Director Bill Rosemann had a lot to say on how Marvel is approaching these games during a recent interview with IGN. "We want to give [developers] freedom to tell their story, and we want to make it an original story," explains Rosemann. "We want to give our partners...freedom to look at all of Marvel history and to pick from what interests them. It's a bit like we're saying, 'Hey you're the chef, you're going to make this meal. Here's all of the ingredients. You pick the ingredients that you like and make a new meal.'"

Rosemann uses Spider-Man’s new costume, specifically the white spider emblem, as an example of how the company is allowing each game to tell a unique story. Of course, Marvel is making sure these games do not alienate their audiences however. He states that the Guardians of the Galaxy game will feel “familiar to people who have seen the movie.”

Furthermore, games will not be rushed out to meet a deadline, and Marvel Games will make sure each game is as good as it can be before it is released.

“We want every game to be game of the year,” says Rosemann.

If Marvel can deliver on its promises, these games will be less like Captain America: Super Soldier and more like Batman: Arkham City. Keep checking back as we learn more in the months ahead.
