When the Shantae: Half-Genie Hero kickstarter campaign finished, developer WayForward promised that the unlocked Risky Boots mode would eventually be released. While the Risky Boots DLC has yet to arrive, WayForward is keeping gamers busy with a free Hard Core Mode.
Hard Core Mode will be patched into the game in Update 1.01. According to a post on the game’s kickstarter page, Shantae: Half-Genie Hero’s Hard Core Mode is “designed to provide an old-school, tough-as-nails challenge to players who miss the days of rage-quitting and throwing controllers.” As described in the post, the Hard Core Mode will consist of:
- Pain and suffering
- Harder hitting enemies
- Faster enemy patterns
- Faster scroll speeds
- Remixed enemy loations, and more of ’em
- New Boss patterns, attacks, and stats
- Healing items capped at six
- Re-balanced magic items
- Poor Shantae
Given that WayForward has developed difficult games such as Contra 4, Bloodrayne Betrayal, and Double Dragon Neon, Hard Core Mode will not be for everyone. On the other hand, the mode is free with Update 1.01, so all Shantae: Half-Genie Hero owners can try the mode at their leisure.
Hard Core Mode is not Update 1.01’s only addition. The update also fixes various bugs on all platforms and gives the PlayStation Vita version PlayStation TV support.
While WayForward has not given any new information on the Risky Boots DLC, the company promises that it will be available soon and wishes that “gamers enjoy Hard Core Mode in the meantime”.
