Nintendo has announced Super Mario Run for iOS devices, a “full-sized Super Mario Bros. action platformer,” planned to release December of this year. An Android version of the game is planned to release at a later point, Nintendo told Kotaku.
The game was unveiled by series creator Shigeru Miyamoto during an Apple event in San Francisco, CA. Mario will run automatically on his own, Miyamoto demonstrated. By tapping on the screen, users will make Mario jump over obstacles and stomp on enemies.
“We have created Super Mario Run to be perfect for playing on your iPhone,” Miyamoto said during the event. “Super Mario has evolved whenever he has encountered a new platform, and for the first time ever, players will be able to enjoy a full-fledged Super Mario game with just one hand, giving them the freedom to play while riding the subway or my favorite, eating a hamburger.”
At launch, Super Mario Run will contain three different modes : A mode in which players collect coins while heading to a goal; a mode for players to compete against each others acrobatic moves; and a mode to create your own Mushroom Kingdom based upon the other mode’s play results.
iOS users will be able to download a portion of the game for free, but the full game will cost a set price to be revealed at a later date. In addition to the game, a free Mario-themed sticker pack for the App Store for iMessage is coming later this month.
