On October 10th, Bethesda finally published a trailer with their promised female protagonist for Prey. Well, sort of.
The trailer is exactly the same as the last, but with a woman doing the voice-over. It’s called “Another Yu”, tapping into humanity’s love of word play.
The creative director of Arkane studios, Raphael Colantonio originally revealed there would be a female protagonist in an interview back in July. He specifically chose a gender neutral name for the protagonist, Morgan Yu. This allows players to effectively play the same character, but as whatever gender they so chose. Gameplay between the two playable characters is exactly the same, and Arkane stresses that it’s allowing the player to create the story they choose.
As the video description says, “Who will your Morgan be? How will you choose to face the Typhon threat overwhelming Talos I?… Morgan Yu is Morgan Yu, and he or she will be defined by the choices you make – it’s yet another way that Arkane is saying yes to the player.”
Arkane continues to prove that they’re working on a project that can go above the game’s original, and completely unrelated, namesake. Along with gender choices, the new Prey sports some hilarious and inventive game mechanics, including an ability that lets you turn into inanimate objects. Hopefully Arkane follows this path and convinces players this new Prey is better than any sequel could be.
Prey is set to release in 2017 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
