It’s been a month since the World Championship began, and after the crazy matches between the best teams in the world, a champion team has been successfully crowned. After a spine-chilling conclusion to the tournament, South Korean team SK Telecom T1 has again taken the title for the third time.
The final matches were between SK Telecom T1 and Samsung Galaxy, the successors to 2015’s World Championship team, Samsung Galaxy White. Both teams had a lot of pressure going for them. SK Telecom T1 were looking to break the eSport record of 3 successive major tournament wins. While Samsung Galaxy needed to win, in order to show fans that despite the organization’s fragmentation, they were still a force to be reckoned with. Despite the 2:3 loss against SK Telecom T1, they’ve shown a degree of skill in their team plays. Unfortunately, SK Telecom T1 simply managed to outplay the team.
SK Telecom T1, having won their third Championship title, the organization has been successfully awarded over $4,000,000 USD in prize winnings from the World Championship tournaments alone. The 2016 World Championships was the first tournament where fans could contribute to the prize pool. In the end, the prize pool jumped to to over $5 million USD compared to previous years at over $2 million USD. With the end of the World Championships, it’s time for all teams to take stock in how they went during the event and hopefully bounce back in for the next season, better than ever.
