Sony Pictures has gotten Shawn Levy, director behind episodes of the Netflix hit series Stranger Things, to direct the Uncharted movie.
The writer of the most recent script draft Joe Carnahan was thought to want to direct as well, but he has moved on to directing Sony’s Bad Boys For Life, which will showcase the buddy cop duo Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. Shawn Levy is known for also directing the Night at the Museum franchise and Real Steel. He is set to direct several more episodes of Season 2 of Stranger Things which will air in July 2017.
The Uncharted movie will be based on the four-part video game series of the same name developed by Naughty Dog and starring treasure hunter Nathan Drake. In the video game series Nathan Drake searches and finds historical mysteries such as El Dorado, Shambhala, Iram of the Pillars, and the treasure of the pirate Henry Avery. The second game, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is the highest rated title of the series and is still currently rated the third highest PlayStation 3 game ever on Metacritic.
The Uncharted movie is still in pre-production and is set for an initial release of June 29th, 2017.
