20th Century Fox has just released a new teaser for the upcoming Assassin’s Creed movie. This teaser focuses on the most important aspect of the entire Assassin’s Creed franchise: The Animus.
The Assassin’s Creed franchise has been around since 2007. It has introduced gamers to numerous characters, countless game mechanics, and several iconic weapons and tools. While the Hidden Blade has become synonymous with the game, The Animus is by far the most important part of the game’s lore.
In the Assassin’s Creed games, The Animus reads an in-game user’s genetic memory, a memory that is believed to be passed down through DNA, and creates a virtual environment the user can explore. In the games, Abstergo Industries uses The Animus to discover the locations of countless ancient artifacts to further its bid for world domination.
In the past, The Animus was a simple stationary object (usually a metal bed or a chair) the user just sits in; the user essentially dreams whatever simulation The Animus creates. The movie’s version of The Animus is very different from what gamers are used to. This new Animus is a giant mechanical arm in an equally giant room that has a small plug that attaches to the base of the user’s skull. This arm appears to allow the protagonist, Callum Lynch, to move around in the room as he traverses the simulation; this new Animus looks like something out of The Matrix.
Whether viewers like or hate this new Animus, it will be a central part of the Assassin’s Creed movie when it releases December 21, 2016.
