Activision Blizzard is a major player in the video games industry. Publishing iconic titles such as Destiny, World of Warcraft, and Call of Duty, they have become a household name among gamers. The company has just launched its new Consumer Products Division in an attempt to reach a wider audience, with the help of its stellar cast of characters and titles.
Detailed on their website, Activision Blizzard have appointed the hugely experienced executive Tim Cilpin as the CEO and President of the new section of its business. Cilpin has formerly been employed at Mattel and Disney, so he seems well suited to the role of bringing the Activision Blizzard universe to new mediums.
The idea behind opening this new division is simple. To grow and expand the fan base for the roster of the companies games and characters, to beyond the computer games market. This will include TV series, merchandising, films, mobile apps and many more fields. It is the hope of Activision Blizzard that with the Consumer Products Division being in charge of this area of business, they can win over new fans and bring in increased revenue as a result.
The prospect of say, a cartoon series based on the Overwatch universe, may initially only appeal to the games (wide) fanbase. If marketed and directed correctly however, an idea like this can bring a huge amount of interest from new consumers, broadening the games appeal even further.
There is no specific details as to what the Consumer Products Division will be working on. It is clear what they want to achieve, and with the powerhouse that is Activision Blizzard devoting a good amount of funds and direction to their new products, it is only a matter of time before this new branch starts to bear fruit.
