During the late 90s, Games-workshop partnered with various video game developers to create RTS games based off the Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer:40,000 universe. While not as successful as more recent warhammer titles, Shadow of the Horned Rat (1995), Epic 40,000: Final Liberation (1997), and Chaos Gate (1998), were the earliest game projects for Games-workshop.
Since these games are so old, they are incredible hard to find. That is why Witcher 3 developer, CD Projekt Red, decided to release the games DRM (digital rights managment) free on GOG.com. GOG VP, Oleg Klapovsky, says “Reviving them meant that we had to dig a lot deeper, but we’re excited to have acquired the rights to re-release some of the most important entries in the Warhammer legacy.”
The games are available for download on GOG.com for a small fee, and they require no codes or online connection to play.
With Total War: Warhammer, and Warhammer 40,000: Eternal Crusade in development, fans of the franchise have some exciting titles to look forward to.
