You have to feel bad for Brad Bird. He spent all that time directing The Iron Giant, and when it released in 1999, no one gave it the time of day. Ten years later, however, it gained more popularity than The Incredibles, Ratatuoille, and any other movie he’d directed. Thankfully, for anyone that didn’t get to see the movie in theaters 16 years ago will get a second chance with The Iron Giant: Signature Edition.
The film goes farther than just remastering the original movie. Pixar also plans on adding some additional scenes that Brad Bird had to scrap out of the final cut of the film. Whether this appeals to you or reminds you of how well the “remastered” versions of the Star Wars Original Trilogy is up to you, but seeing how they were created by Bird himself, I think it would be safe to say that the scenes will fit into the already amazing classic film. And worst case scenario, you have to dust off the VCR player and watch the original.
The Iron Giant will also have a limited screening at some theaters between September 30th and October 4th. You can watch the trailer below. As someone who’s had the opportunity to see it, I’d definitely suggest The Iron Giant. And maybe you can be someone’s Superman and take them to see it too!
