There are reports this week from multiple Playstation 4 users that an icon for Destiny has appeared in their game library, even if they never played or owned the game.
As it turns out, this a new form of promotion from Sony, and when activated, the icon will take the user to Destiny in the Playstation Store, where they have the option to purchase it. As many have noted, the edition of Destiny that is promoted through this scheme is the most expensive one available.
According to a report from Polygon, this is a new scheme from Sony, designed for the PS4 to deliver “personalised, curated content” to its users. This ties in with reports earlier this week that Sony was looking to possibly integrate adverts into the home screen of the Playstation 4.
“The PS4 system has the ability to learn about your preferences” reads a statement on the PS4 website. “It will learn your likes and dislikes, allowing you to discover content pre-loaded and ready to go on your console in your favourite game genres or by your favourite creators.”
Sony had previously stated that it would be treating Destiny like a first-party exclusive game, after striking numerous deals with Activision that saw limited edition Ps4 Destiny branded consoles, and other content made available exclusively on the Playstation 4. Taking this into account, it’s hardly surprising Sony is pushing so hard in marketing the game to its customers.
